Stair Climbing Adventures: The Day I Discovered Fitness Was Already Happening
I recently had one of my favorite fitness adventures yet — and it didn’t happen on my treadmill.
Behind my apartment building, I discovered a beautiful stream tucked away in nature. One of the groundskeepers kindly gave me a private tour, and the path included something unexpected: stairs… lots of them.
The journey to the stream involved a rickety staircase with 37 steps down and 37 back up. Add that to my apartment routine — 8 flights of stairs (seven with 8 steps and one with 6) from the top floor to ground level and back — and suddenly this peaceful nature walk became a serious stair-climbing session.
What surprised me most?
1. I climbed 8 flights in under two minutes.
I realized I feel stronger and fitter than I sometimes give myself credit for.
2. The climb felt fun, not forced.
There was no pressure. No countdown. No “you must burn this.” It was movement with joy.
3. My body still needed recovery.
The next day, my feet and knees wanted rest, massage, and a little extra kindness.
That taught me something important:
Just because an activity feels easy doesn’t mean it places no demand on the body.
Next time? Wear sneakers. I did this adventure in slippers!
I also struggled with something unexpected: guilt.
Because I rested afterward, I missed some of my treadmill and indoor workouts. Part of me felt like I had “fallen behind.”
But then I remembered:
Fitness includes life.
Walking. Exploring. Climbing stairs. Carrying groceries. Chores. Nature adventures.
Structured workouts matter, but so do major daily activities.
Sometimes fitness looks like reps.
Sometimes fitness looks like a hidden stream and 37 wooden steps.
And sometimes the healthiest thing you can do… is rest.
Fitness adventures are absolutely worth it.
